How to play Animenopoly.
(Posted on Sunday, 9 March 2003 by Dragon)

It's always asked. Just how do you play it?

The Basics.

Animenopoly is played much like a normal game of Monopoly. Only since everybody cannot play in turns, time is the limiting factor. Each player gains one turn every 3 hours from the start of the game. These are cumulative. New players are not hampered since they will always have the equivalent number of turns as if they had join right at the start of the game. In addition to help out latecomers to the game, they are also given extra tapes at a rate of 25 per day. So a player starting the game at 10am on the 3rd day would receive 11 turns and 50 tapes.

As players progress around the board, they have the opportunity to buy the licenses they land on. At first players have little or no money, so they must move to build up their reserves before they can buy. This stops the early players from getting a good foothold and dominating the game.

As the game progresses the board eventually fills up with all the licenses being taken. Careful players would buy according to their needs and so build a portfolio of good licenses. However it is very rare that a player will be able to buy all the licenses of any given colour group during normal play.

After Day 10, the teams come into play. Players may group up in teams to try and form powerful groups of cards. In this way they can eventually try and dominate the game. One drawback to being in a team is the fact that all team members which win a game share the winnings between them.

Advanced.

Once you can begin to understand how the game is played you can adapt your strategy to trying to win. There are two main strategies for trying to win. The first is the "attack" method, where you play aggressively, the second is the "respond" method where to base your moves on the results of other players moves. You can combine these methods or adapt them as the game progresses.

Attack Method - This involves you always using your moves right to the limit in an attempt to get as many licenses as possible. This method works very well at the start of the game when the board is relatively empty. Later in the game this sort of method is a sure recipe for losing - unless you have a number of licenses with which you can recover your enivitable losses.

Respond Method - This method ensure that you always have moves in reserve to respond to an opportunity, usually caused by somebody dropping out of the game and leaving licenses free. However there is a danger that if you do not keep an eye on your moves then your could be caught by the elimination process for not moving far enough.

One method for keeping you safe is to always have at least 10 moves in reserve. This allows you to claim the rent on one of your licenses in the event of going into negative score whilst playing.

Special Options.

Special Options have been recently introduced to add some vareity to the various games. These include No Teams, Tax/Interest, and a few other features. Take special note before you join a game as to wether it fits your play style.
