Unfortunately, they have also become known for somewhat oversexed tape boxes.

Afura Mann is one of the priestesses of Mount Muldoon in El Hazard OAV's and TV series El Hazard - The Alternative World, as well as The Wanderers TV show. Afura is the most level headed of the three priestesses. Her skills are those of the wind. She is able to fly and use powerful blasts of air that can destroy a whole Bugrom attack ship. Afura seems to have little tolerance for Shayla Shayla and her temper problems. The two pick on each other on a regular basis even if they are friends. Afura tends to be the serious thinker in the group of adventurers.

Ai Orikasa Seiyuu
A Japanese seiyuu, is most known in the West for her role as the space pirate Ryoko in the 1992 OVA series Tenchi Muyo! and all of it's later incarnations. Aisha Clan-Clan Character
A major character from Outlaw Star. A member of the Ctarl-Ctarl race, known for its viciousness in battle, Aisha is assigned to search for the legendary Galactic Leyline... though not even she knows exactly what it is, only that it is powerful. Aisha is extremely rash and prone to jump to conclusions, getting her into all sorts of trouble; she's not too bright, either. As a Ctarl-Ctarl, she has lycanthropic abilities, allowing her to transform (well, get bigger and stronger) by drawing on the power of the moon's phase. Even on a moonless space station, she is a formidable hand-to-hand opponent when transformed. Aisha doesn't get along with nor trust the other crew of the Outlaw Star, who often wonder how she ended up tagging along with them; however, since they are all searching for the same thing (and Aisha doesn't have a ship at her disposal) , it remains an uneasy but peaceful arrangement.

Akagi, Ritsuko Character
A major character from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Ritsuko's mother was instrumental in the creation of the MAGI computer system, and Ritsuko followed her by creating the necessary software interfaces. The doctor (Ph.D. style, of course) is quite acerbic at times, and difficult to get along with. She went through college with Misato Katsuragi and Ryoji Kaji, who are her closest friends. Ritsuko maintains an occasional affair with Gendo Ikari, the head of NERV, though this may be due more to the fact that the two know the secret intentions of NERV than any sort of attraction to each other. Ritsuko does not like Rei, and assumes that the reverse is true as well.

However, Akari appears totally inept at just about every event and is at the bottom of her class at training school. With friends to help her and rivals to challenge her, she attempts to improve herself so that she can go to the University Satellite and compete in the Great Competition for the title of Cosmo Beauty.

Akira Ishida Seiyuu
The talented Japanese voice actor behind famous characters such as Kaworu Nagisa (Evangelion), Xelloss (Slayers), Ren (Fushigi Yuugi OAV) and Fish Eye (Sailor Moon SuperS). He seems to voice many effeminate male characters, and as a consequence he is popular with female seiyuu fans.

Akito Hayama Character
A character from the anime series, Kodomo no Omocha (Child's Toy). Unlike the main character, Sana Kurata, Akito is a gloomy, pessimistic boy. He has short light brown hair and brown eyes and takes karate lessons in hopes of becoming the world champion one day. He also has a crush on Sana though he doesn't show it aside from his jealous nature. He was the leader figure of the boys in his class back when they were constantly disrupting class, picking on the teacher and fellow classmates. The reason for his twisted personality started when he was three years old and his older sister, Natsumi (age six) , told him (rather harshly) that the reason why they didn't have a mother was because he had "killed her". The truth was that their mother was physically weak, but gave birth to Akito anyway. Back then, Akito was still getting along with his father, but after Natsumi blamed him for their mother's death, she added in that their father actually hated him too. Because of that, Akito began to hate the world and did not open up his heart to anyone except for his friend Tsuyoshi Sasaki until Sana came along. With Sana's made for television movie that she made the Hayama family watch, Akito's family life had brightened up.

Akito Tenkawa Character
The hero of the scifi-comedy-drama series Martian Successor Nadesico, Tenkawa Akito holds the secret to the Boson Jump system, a key element to the series. Originally planning to be a cook, Akito finds out about his lost past on the battleship Nadesico and becomes an ace Aestevalis pilot. Although he was overshadowed by the popularity of Hoshino Ruri, Akito still played a major part in the immensely popular Nadesico movie.

Albatou, Dilandau Character
The young bishonen Dilandau is the ace guymelef pilot for the Zaibach Empire, in the anime Vision of Escaflowne. He is the head of an elite guymelef squadron, assigned to capture Escaflowne itself. Dilandau's handsome features belie an insane nature, and he revels in death and destruction. He also has a special fondness for fire, an intense vanity and arrogance, and a tendency to disobey orders. Dilandau's failure to capture Escaflowne and it's pilot, Van Fanel, drives him ever more over the edge of insanity. Dilandau's dark past also hides several devastating secrets.

Alex Matulich Person
Author of JACOsub subtitling software for Amiga computers.

Alita Character
A combat cyborg from the manga series Battle Angel, of which she is the title character. The name of the character in the original Japanese manga was "Gally", which was changed for the English translation but not for the two-episode OAV release. Alita is a cyborg, scavenged from a junk pile by the doctor Ido Daisuke and rebuilt. Amnesiac, her only link to her past is the awesome fighting ability of her Panzer Kunst martial arts technique. Through the long length of the series, Alita is equipped with a variety of bodies, including a powerful "berserker" combat body, a wheeled racing model for the sport "Motorball", and eventually a custom body created in the floating city Tiphares. Alita treats Ido like a father and is distraught at his later disappearance, falls in love with the doomed Hugo and later with the nomadic Figure Four, and spends over half the series opposing the mad scientist Desty Nova and the bandit warlord Den. Alita is not rude, per se, but is very direct and has no patience for delays or verbal hedging.

Allen Schezar Character
The main "bishounen" of the anime series The Vision of Escaflowne, Allen is a master at the sword one of the Asturian Knights of Heaven. He has achieved the fine balance of being both a playboy and a gentleman (a feat very few men can accomplish) and has a knack for making most women weak at the knees with his very charming nature.

Alpha case Technical Term
Standard-sized DVD storage case utilizing a bracket that must be pinched in order to lift out the disc. Unpopular with many fans.

Alpha shell Technical Term
Durable VHS tape shell made by now-defunct plastics manufacturer Shape, used in early ADV Films releases and some AnimEigo releases. Memorable for smaller tape windows, streamlined appearance, and multiple colors.

Amaray Keepcase Technical Term
Standard-sized DVD storage case utilizing a pressure-sensitive bracket in the shape of a yin-yang, which releases the disc when pressed. Many fans prefer this style of DVD case, while others report trouble with the disc coming out unintentionally and bouncing around the case, becoming scratched. Several different mold variations are known to exist.

Amaterasu Character
Amaterasu is the main character of Mamoru Nagano's Five Star Stories. His full name is Amaterasu Dis Grand Grees Eydas IV, and he is the emperor of Grees on the planet of Delta Belun. Although he is male, he is very feminine in appearance, and indeed he often uses one of his female subordinates to stand in for him. His goal is to prevent the eventual collapse of human society in the Joker Cluster, by unifying all the warring kingdoms, and his journey will eventually last over five billion years. He is named after the sun goddess of Japanese mythology, who all Japanese emperors claim direct descent from, and indeed he exhibits godlike powers as the series unfolds. Amaterasu also sometimes masquerades as Ladios Sopp, a simple mortar headd designer.

Amelia De Wil Tesla Saillune Character
A major character in the Slayers anime. The daughter of Philionel El De Saillune, prince of the city Saillune, she is in the direct line to the throne (though, in her early teens, she is years away from leadership of the city.) An accomplished shrine maiden, she is skilled at all three types of magic, though relatively less in black magic than white and shamanist. Her strong belief in justice borders on pathological and gets her into trouble a lot, not to mention her tendency towards hero-worship. Very close friends (not quite something more) with Zelgadis Greywords, a chimera companion.
